A cloth satchel, eyeglasses, and a closed folder on a dark wooden table

What a teacher puts in the cloth bag the night before

Thursday, after the last class

A first sitting in the planning room fails in a dull way when the folder is a pile of everything saved since the first appointment letter. The households who use the hour well have spent the previous evening choosing, not polishing. A secondary-school teacher in Su-ngai Kolok described her Thursday this way: she left school, ate, and then opened the cupboard where pay slips go because the drawer in the desk is for marking.

She did not try to build a full history. She took the newest pay slip, the cooperative passbook, a scrap with the amount sent to her mother, and the school-fee note for her own son. The older pay slips stayed in the cupboard. If a line needed a comparison, she knew where they were.

Leave the decorations at home

Certificates, prize photographs, and the original appointment letter are precious and rarely needed for pre-retirement household financial planning. The sitting is about baht that arrive and baht that leave. An appointment date matters when it changes the year you expect to stop; a photocopy of that date is enough. Originals of identity papers can stay at the house.

If a spouse will come, the cloth bag should hold one paper of theirs as well, even if they say they have nothing. A motorcycle instalment in one name and a salary in the other is a household fact. The sitting goes more quietly when that paper is already in the bag.

A short list written on the bag itself

She wrote four words on a piece of tape on the bag: slip, cooperative, mother, fees. The tape was not a system. It stopped her from adding the entire cupboard at the door. In the room we can work with four papers and a spoken account of the rest. We cannot work as well with a sack that has not been looked at since the flood season.

If you are packing for Pasemat, use the same restraint. Bring the latest versions. Know where the older ones live. Come ready to say, in one sentence, the year you currently believe the teaching wage will stop.
