Client notes
What was said after the papers went home
These notes name the sitting and the constraint. They are accounts from households who agreed to be quoted. Lengths differ because people talk differently when the summary is already in the bag.

I brought three years of pay slips and the cooperative book. The third sitting was the one that changed how we talk at home: the school-fee months became their own line instead of hiding inside food. I still check that line on the first of the month.

My shop takings are fat before the holiday and thin after the rains. The ledger sitting used a fat week and a thin week, not an average I have never lived. I pinned the thin-week page inside the till cupboard.

She read my GPF booklet more slowly than I do. The sketch shows the pension and the rent from the small house in the same column, which is how the money will actually arrive.
Pranee Kaewmanee, civil servant · Retirement Income Sketch -
I left the second sitting annoyed. We had spent most of the hour on the money we send to my mother, and I had come wanting a date when I could leave the highways department. Naree would not write a date until that line was on the page. She was right about the line, and I still think the hour could have moved faster.

Siti’s folder, and the line that had been called food
Siti teaches in Su-ngai Kolok. Her husband keeps a small repair bench. They booked the Household Pre-Retirement Review because her department date was twelve years away and his bench income already rose and fell. At the first sitting she brought a cloth bag with the newest pay slip, the cooperative passbook, and a scrap for her mother. The older pay slips stayed in the cupboard, which saved the hour.
The second sitting stalled on the word food. Their notebook had one large number that included rice, the son’s school fees in certain months, and the transfer to Siti’s mother. Split apart, the school-fee months were the tight ones, not the months they had blamed on the market. The third sitting put her cooperative share and his irregular bench income on the later-years page, with a margin note that his income should not be copied as a salary. At the fourth sitting she corrected a name on the summary and took the pages home the same afternoon.
A year later she came for the check-in because the son’s fees had ended and her mother had moved closer, which raised the grocery line and lowered the transfer. The revised page was shorter than the first summary. She said the useful habit was the first-of-the-month look at the school line, even after the fees stopped, because something else always tries to hide in the same place.
Hassan’s thin week after the rains
Hassan’s dry-goods shop is busy when people travel through the border market and quiet when the rains keep them home. He did not want a six-week review yet. He wanted to know why a “normal” month on a scrap of paper never matched the cash in the till. The Cash Ledger Sitting used the week before a holiday and the week after a stretch of rain, both taken from his day-book.
The thin week still sent the same amount to his father. Stock purchases were what moved. Once that was visible, he stopped using a single monthly figure to decide whether he could add a cooperative share. He pinned the thin-week page inside the cupboard and left the fat-week page in a folder. He has not booked the full review. He said he will when his niece is ready to stand at the till, which he thinks is closer to eight years than to three. The ledger hour did not try to hurry that sentence.
