Counting the years a civil-service salary may still arrive

Start from the date you can say aloud

Civil servants who come to the planning room in Pasemat often arrive with a Government Pension Fund booklet and a private doubt about the year they will actually stop. The department date, the year a spouse hopes for, and the year the household can afford are three different dates. Pre-retirement household financial planning begins by writing all three, then choosing which one the sketch will use. The others stay in the margin so they are not lost.

If you cannot yet say a year, say a range: eight years, or twelve. A range is enough to start a review. A false precise date, chosen to look organised, makes the later cash lines look more certain than they are.

The booklet and the salary are different lines

The salary that still arrives each month and the pension or fund amount that may arrive later are not the same line. Households mix them when they say “I will have about this much.” In the room we keep the current salary on the cash page and the later amount on the income sketch. The years between are the point of the work: school fees that may end, a parent line that may not, a house repair you already know is coming, a motorcycle that will be paid off.

Bring the booklet even if you find it dull. We read the recorded amount and the conditions you have already been given. We do not replace the department’s own calculation. If a figure on the booklet disagrees with a letter from the office, the letter wins until you have asked the office which page to trust, and the sketch says which page we used.

A department date can move

People in Narathiwat delay leaving because a child is still in school, or they leave earlier because a parent needs them at home. The yearly check-in exists for that kind of change. Until then, count the years from the date you are willing to plan around, and keep the alternative in the margin. The household can live with a corrected page. It struggles with a page that pretended the first date was destiny.
